Lance found a new cinnamon gum sold in these handy tins so we had several sitting around. What sparked the idea for these candles was a trip to Urban Outfitters last week where they were selling groups of little candles in small tins. Well, of course I wasn't going to pay for them when I knew we had candle wax and tins at home. I used cinnamon & spice scent and red dye.
If you are looking for candle making supplies you can find a large selection at both Michael's and AC Moore craft stores, as well as several web sites that sell soap and candle making goods. For a project like this, where there is only a small amount of wax being poured in a small container, I recommend the regular block wax as opposed to beeswax. The beeswax shrinks to much when it cools, and you won't have much room to top this tin off with a new layer of wax in order to end up with a pretty flat surface.
What's Needed:
old candy tins with covers
wax, wax scent and dye
double boiler or Pyrex glass container for melting wax
small wicks with clips (this will hold the wick up straight)
Melt wax in a double boiler or other similiar contraption. I put a little steaming rack on the bottom of the pan and then place the measuring cup on top of the rack. Basically, melting wax is just like melting chocolate; the wax should never come in direct contact with the heat of the pan. When the wax is all melted that's when I stir in the scent and the dye.
